In Memory of Roger

I had to put Roger, my friend and muse, to sleep yesterday.  He was a wonderful cat!

December 30 & 31, 2012

On the 30th, we explored Naples and its beach.
On the 31st, I discovered this turtle living in one of the burrows in my aunt's back yard.  Daniel had seen an armadillo, and apparently they dig very similar holes, so I think they both live back there.
 Aunt Janet and Uncle Day.
I got home on New Years Eve in time to watch the fireworks from the roof of my condo in Eastport.

December 29, 2012, Part III

Making friends (with feathers and scales) at the Skunk Ape Research Center.

December 29, 2012, Part II

We had lunch at a roadside deli and drove down to Marco Island, which we found was subject to rampant overdevelopment.  The only public water access was from a small park where there were a bunch of fishermen, humans and pelicans.  We saw two guys pull this gigantic catfish out of the water.

We then drove down through Everglades City to Chokoloskee, an island that felt like it was at the end of the world.

December 29, 2012, Part I

While driving around Collier County in the morning, Daniel and I discovered a mosquito (er, bird) sanctuary, which was lovely until we had to flee as we were being eaten alive...

And then we found this boardwalk through the marshes which was relatively bug-free...
 And had a great overlook.

Airboat ride in the Everglades.  Lots of alligators!!!

December 27, 2012

Daniel and I drove up to Sanibel Island, rented a couple of bikes and picked up seashells on the beach.

Meanwhile, Back Home

Roger was curled up in a donut in front of the woodstove.
Dad and the other cats were sleeping.
 And it was snowing!
