I painted this watercolor in Cortona, Italy when I was studying abroad in Florence. I traveled almost every weekend, and one weekend in March of 2002 I took the bus to Cortona. This site was on a path just outside the town. I'd given up on youth hostels by this point because the ones in Italy weren't very nice, so I stayed in an inexpensive hotel. I'm afraid that all of the Tuscan hill towns sort of blur together in my memory and all I can remember about Cortona was the light hitting the red tiled roofs, lots of hills, and large amounts of wine.
I earned a BFA at Syracuse University and spent a year studying abroad in Florence, Italy. I am now a sailmaker and artist in Annapolis, MD. I race and cruise my three sailboats on the weekends. I enjoy painting landscapes, especially around the Chesapeake Bay. Often I will paint a watercolor sketch on site and then paint a finished oil from it in the studio. I have also been working on pet portraits, still lifes, and figure drawings lately. I also post photos of boat projects, sailing, traveling, and my life on this blog.
