Wooden Boat Race 2012

Messing About in Boats
On a gorgeous day one weekend in September, I went sailing with some friends in our assortment of small wooden home built boats.

Sailing Trip 2012 Part Six
Sunday 9 September 2012
0818 Started engine rafted up with Interlude in Dividing Creek
0835 Cast off from Interlude.
1002 Main up -- two reefs -- killed engine -- off Tilghman Point.
1011 Raised blade jib 4.7 knots.
1020 Shook second reef.
1035 Interlude is sailing ahead of me with a Sabre between the two of us. Someone on the Sabre just fired a gun for no apparent reason.
1103 What a beautiful day!!!
1201 Shook 1st reef by Bloody Point.
1221 Started engine to head for Annapolis.
1234 Main down.
1412 Passed off Morgaine to Mom and Dad on Interlude. Went smoothly. Off of Horn Point Shoal Pole.
1430 Through Spa Creek Bridge.
1440 Ca Ira secured in slip at Burnside St.
1510 Cleaned and sponged out ice chest. Pumped and sponged bilge dry.
1513 Put on shoes for the first time since last Friday. I need to buy stove alcohol. Need to fix fresh water pump and check port running light and check stereo.
1633 Vessel cleaned and secured at Burnside St. slip.

Sailing Trip 2012 Part 5

0916 Diesel 7/8 full.
0921 Started engine. Both batteries.
0935 Anchor up. Departing Dun Cove.
Knapp's Narrows Marina and Inn. 2.63 gallons of diesel, water, ice.
1056 Clear of Knapp's Narrows Chanel. Morgaine is back in her place behind us, fenders are in, and I did not get run over by the Stanley Norman :)
1158 Motored through Poplar Island Channel, then raised double reefed main and killed engine. 4.2 knots.
1216 Blade jib up. 4.5 knots broad reach up Eastern Bay.
1318 Shook one reef. Approaching Tilghman Point.
My stereo is not turning on at all now. It's a good thing I kept the first reef in the main because I needed it after I rounded Tilghman Point. Even with it, I was spilling air from the main as I tacked towards the Wye where I lowered the jib and main and started up the engine.
The first time I set the anchor in Shaw Bay, I noticed that the trip line was just long enough so that the float was on the surface, then when I put weight on the anchor, the float popped just below the surface. I was in 18' of water and I guess that was too deep for the float.
1528 I motored around Shaw Bay and could not find any place shallower than 16', so I cut off the float and set the anchor in 18' of water. We'll see how this works when I go to raise the anchor.
1840 Took apart the fuse box and stereo. Got out the voltmeter and couldn't remember how to use it. Called Dad and the stereo miraculously fixed itself, though I think the problem is a loose connection in the wires behind the stereo.

1123 Started engine. Both batteries. Fell asleep.
1247 Killed engine.
1327 Started engine. Both batteries.
Raised anchor. Motored up Wye East River following Interlude.
1424 Rafted alongside of Interlude in Dividing Creek. Ton of wind.
Bad storm approaching Saturday night.
Ca Ira and Interlude rafted up together after the storm.
One day left of my cruise to write up on the blog. I'll try to do it tomorrow.

Sailing Trip 2012 Part Four

0810 Started engine both batteries.
0825 Up anchor departing Old House Cove.
Mark at Drum point.
0925 Full main up. Killed engine. Running towards G77.
0930 Jib up. Jibed.
0941 Pole out- wing-on-wing- I managed to hit the port running light with the pole a few times and now there's a bad connection.
0957 Pole down. Broad reach. 2 knots. Rain.
1520 So to sum up the last several hours: The rain got harder, the wind built, so off of Cove Point, I lowered the sails and started the engine (thank god that Dad and I fixed the steaming light before I left) The rain got lighter, so once past RW"CP"Mo(A) Whis, I raised the main, with one reef this time, and the 150% genny. To point into the Choptank, I had to tack and this was frustrating, then the wind got gustier, and after the port cockpit coaming went in the water, I put on my lifejacket and lowered the sails and motored to Choptank R "10" where the rain had stopped, the wind lightened, and there were even a few specs of blue sky - I think - it's been so long since I've seen one. Now I'm broad reaching towards the mouth of Harris Creek at 4.5 knots wondering what all the fuss and fear was about.
1630 Harris Creek. Sails down. Engine on. Set up anchor.
1709 Hook down. Dun Cove. Exhausted.
I accomplished something today. It was far from the worst that the bay is capable of. It wasn't even as bad as the worst that I've personally been on the bay in, but it still was hard and I've been rewarded by a quiet anchorage and what promises to be a lovely sunset.
1912 Rowed Morgaine over to a bit of beach where I took everything out of her. Lifted her up to drain most of the (rain) water out (about 3".) Not strong enough to completely empty her - I had to sponge out the last bit. Raised sail and said "hi" to the 2 other boats anchored in Dun Cove, a guy and his girlfriend? from Baltimore, on a Hunter, and a really nice old man, his wife, and springer spaniel on a trawler. Sailed back to Ca Ira - didn't have to use the oars and had a great landing :)
(I was so tired when I wrote this last journal entry that my handwriting was terrible.)

0919 A big gray cloud south of me does not look as threatening as it did an hour ago. Ton of wind. But need to go to Solomon's for ice.
Started engine both batteries.
0935 Up anchor departed St. Leonard's Creek.
1032 Just passed a small odd-looking naval ship anchored by at least three anchors by Point Patience. The "Apache." Wonder what they're doing? Some little grey navy boats zipping around.
1138 Spring Cove Marina. 1.8 gallons diesel, ice, water
1220 Anchored Old House Cove, Mill Creek, Solomon's.
1538 Rowed Morgaine to head of Old House Cove, where I startled a duck, then I sailed her to the intersection of Mill Creek and St. John Creek, wind fluky and I thought I heard thunder and saw lightening, so I came back to Ca Ira. No precip. Yet.
